DC OFFICE OF PLANNING - WASHINGTON, DC

CENTRALIZED PROCESSING FACILITY STUDY

FEASIBILITY AND VIABILITY | 2020 - 2021

Food Works Group, in partnership with Cureate and DC Office of Planning, developed a plan for a centralized processing facility to provide equitable access to healthy, regionally-produced food for all District residents. This facility is intended to provide a venue for programming and offer much-needed physical infrastructure, including cold storage, aggregation services, and other support for regional farmers and food producers to reach a variety of food businesses. All of these components will bolster the District’s food economy by increasing the amount of regionally-procured food. Special attention was paid to developing resilient practices based on early lessons from the Covid-19 public health emergency and the emerging gaps in the national supply chain. Food Works Group conducted extensive interviews, convened experts, and developed a thorough, thoughtful, and technically-sophisticated work product for the study that the District government commissioned. Wendy was responsive and collaborative, and a pleasure to work with.
