FOOD LIFELINE - SEATTLE, WA

PLANNING A COMMUNITY-ALIGNED FOOD HUB FACILITY

LANDSCAPE ANALYSIS, FEASIBILITY AND VIABILITY | 2021 - 2022

Working with Seattle-based food bank Food Lifeline and several community and regional food access partners, Food Works Group (FWG) assessed the need for and design of a food hub facility in South Seattle. FWG’s first charge was to determine the functionality of the facility that would enable hunger relief agencies to increase their work with local food, as well as support marginalized farmers to have more opportunities to access the market. Next, FWG provided a preliminary facility design and complete financial modeling, with multiple potential scenarios for consideration. Recommendations also included a governance structure to support increased volumes of local food available to hunger relief agencies, increased collaboration among these agencies, and prioritized support to BIPOC-, Immigrant-, and Refugee-led and -serving growers and community-based organizations.
